My first sales and marketing experience was when I was about 12 years old. I was selling newspapers on the street. I was learning how to make money on my own. It wasn’t a lot of money but I was making some pocket cash. I would announce the names of newspapers I was selling and how much for. I would try different phrases depending on who I saw walking by. Some times, I would lead with the price. Other times, I would lead with a question. One day, I had a blast as a group of newspaper sellers from another street approached me. They had run out of newspapers to sell and they asked me to sell everything I had to them. It was a huge time saver, and I was so excited that I did not have to work very hard that day. I am extremely thankful to my mother who had suggested this way of earning pocket cash to me! Only now I realize how much this experience helps me. I sell ideas and solutions every day to my clients and employers, and while I may not have a perfect record, many co-workers have commended me on my ability to get buy-in.
